The Minnesota Vikings aren’t about to let their season crumble after losing star quarterback Kirk Cousins to a season-ending torn Achilles. In a move that underscores their determination to remain contenders in the NFC playoff race, the Vikings have traded for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Dobbs.

The trade, which also involves late-round draft picks, was announced on Tuesday, bringing Dobbs to Minnesota in exchange for a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2024 seventh-round pick, according to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

While the trade doesn’t guarantee that Dobbs will step into the starting role immediately, it presents the Vikings with a viable option at a critical juncture in their season. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has indicated that rookie Jaren Hall is the likely starter in the upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons. However, given the unpredictable nature of the NFL, Dobbs might have an opportunity to showcase his skills and lead the Vikings on the field.

This strategic trade follows the devastating news that Cousins, who had been instrumental in the Vikings’ three consecutive victories, will miss the remainder of the season due to his injury. Despite this setback, Minnesota stands at a respectable 4-4 and remains alive in the competitive NFC playoff race, determined to make the most of the season’s second half.

Dobbs’ journey to the Vikings has its share of twists and turns. The Cleveland Browns traded the quarterback to the Cardinals earlier this season, with Arizona investing a fifth-round pick to acquire his services. However, Dobbs’ tenure as the Cardinals’ starter was short-lived, culminating in a surprising reversal by Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon. After initially announcing that Dobbs would start in Week 9, the decision was swiftly reversed in favor of Kyler Murray or rookie Clayton Tune.

Dobbs has faced recent struggles on the field, characterized by fumbles in five consecutive games and interceptions in three of his last four. Nevertheless, his experience and adaptability make him a valuable asset to teams needing a quick fix. The 28-year-old quarterback earned his first career NFL start last season with the Tennessee Titans and was entrusted with the starting role for the Cardinals this year.

nn

Dobbs’ season statistics include 1,569 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions. His move to the Vikings, currently in second place in their division, opens up new possibilities. Minnesota boasts a talented receiving corps that could soon welcome back star wide receiver Justin Jefferson from injured reserve, adding another dynamic dimension to the offense.

On Tuesday, the Vikings also traded offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland to the Jacksonville Jaguars as part of their commitment to adapt and compete in the face of adversity. While Cousins’ absence will be felt, the Vikings are determined to remain in the postseason picture and do their best to secure a playoff berth.
