In the world of sports, few stories have resonated as deeply and stirred as much controversy as the Colin Kaepernick saga. Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the national anthem in protest of racial injustice and police brutality in 2016 sent shockwaves throughout the NFL, ultimately leading to his exile from the league. Now, seven years later, a meeting between Kaepernick, his agent, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has raised the possibility of a comeback in the XFL.

Let’s rewind to 2016 when Kaepernick took a bold stance by refusing to stand for the national anthem. In his own words, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” This principled stand ignited a national conversation that extended far beyond the football field. Kaepernick’s exile from the NFL, not for his ability but for his activism, became a symbol of the complex intersection between sports and social justice.

Since then, the quarterback who once led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl has not taken a snap in the NFL. His journey in the years that followed was marked by legal battles, activism, and a quest for justice both on and off the field. Despite his absence from the league, Kaepernick’s impact reverberated across the sports world, influencing a new generation of athletes to use their platforms for social change.

As Kaepernick remained sidelined from the NFL in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, the landscape of football saw the emergence of alternative leagues like the XFL. Players seeking to prove they still had the skills often looked to these leagues for a shot at redemption. However, Kaepernick’s demands for at least $20 million to play in any league, including the XFL, raised eyebrows. The league was willing to pay well but not quite that much.

In a surprising turn of events, earlier this season, following the surprising season-ending injury to Aaron Rodgers. Kaepernick expressed interest in joining the New York Jets’ practice squad, sending a letter through J. Cole. His words reflected a willingness to prove himself, stating, “Worst case scenario, you see what I have to offer and you’re not that impressed. Best case scenario, you realize you have a real weapon at your disposal in the event you ever need to use it.” Unfortunately, the Jets opted not to pursue him.

Now, the latest development has The Rock, owner of the XFL, meeting with Kaepernick and his agents. Dwayne Johnson confirmed the meeting, describing it as a “good meeting” that explored opportunities for Kaepernick. However, he expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a deal coming to fruition.

Kaepernick’s past disinterest in the XFL due to high salary demands complicates the situation.

Additionally, his workout with the Raiders last season, which reportedly did not go well, has left lingering questions about his playing abilities.

The central issue remains: Was it wrong what happened to Colin Kaepernick? Many believe it was, seeing his exile as a consequence of his activism rather than his skills as a quarterback. However, the larger question is whether Kaepernick can still play at the level required by professional football and which team, if any, will be willing to take the risk of signing him.

As discussions continue, the possibility of Kaepernick’s return to the gridiron remains uncertain. One thing is clear: the Kaepernick saga is nearing a conclusion, however, in the present it continues to shine a light on the intersection of sports, activism, and justice in America.
