Sun Defeat Mercury 96-69!

Uncasville, CT – Today, the Connecticut Sun dominated the Phoenix Mercury with a 96-69 victory in their final home game at Mohegan Sun Arena before the Olympic break. This win marks the Sun’s third triumph over the Mercury in 2024, with one final matchup set for September 13 in Phoenix.

Pregame, Coach Stephanie White emphasized the team’s readiness, stating, “We had the opportunity to practice, and the team was ready to go!” This preparation was evident as the Sun took to the court.

As the Sun were introduced to the song “Rise and Fall,” the atmosphere was electric, with players all smiles, ready to put on a show” and it was all smiles. as Rachel Banham tied the franchise record for three-point makes. Rachel Banham had a standout performance, leading the Sun with a season-high 24 points, highlighted by a career-high eight three-point field goals. Banham’s achievement tied Shekinna Stricklen’s franchise record for most threes in a game and set a new WNBA record for the most threes made in a game by a player coming off the bench DeWanna Bonner added 17 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Brionna Jones chipped in with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and one steal. DiJonai Carrington achieved her first career double-double, recording 12 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block.

After a tightly contested first quarter, which ended 20-20, the Sun pulled away, outscoring the Mercury 76-49 for the remainder of the game. The Sun scored a season-high 96 points, with a season-high 37 field goals, 26 assists, and 37 bench points. They also tied their season highs for three-pointers made (10) and offensive rebounds (16).

For Phoenix, Kahleah Copper led with 17 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Brittney Griner followed with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Natasha Cloud added 10 points and a team-high six assists. The Sun shot an impressive 47.4% (37-78) from the field, while holding the Mercury to 40.6% (28-69). Connecticut’s defense was especially dominant in the second half, restricting Phoenix to 28.6% (10-35) shooting and forcing 17 turnovers, which translated into 21 points.

Postgame, DiJonai Carrington reflected on her defensive performance against Kahleah Copper, stating, “I take defense personally and it was time to lock in!
