Atlanta Dream Beat the Sun After Surviving the Storm

The Atlanta Dream and Connecticut Sun have faced off four times this season in a series marked by fierce competition and shifting dynamics. Early in the season, the Sun controlled the first meeting with a 69-50 blowout, showcasing their elite defense. The Dream responded in the second clash, securing a gutsy 78-74 victory. Connecticut reclaimed dominance in the third game with an 80-67 win, but this fourth time they would face a fully healthy Dream squad for the first time in the series finale.

Coming into this matchup, the Dream carried momentum from a thrilling last-second win against the Seattle Storm, where veteran center Tina Charles delivered in the clutch. Charles has been a consistent force against the Sun, scoring in double digits in all three of their matches prior to today’s game, proving to be a reliable offensive option in each matchup.

The Dream’s preparation was marked by renewed chemistry and focus, following what players described as a “second training camp” during the Olympic break. Haley Jones emphasized the importance of bonding, saying, “We had a lot of bonding time, building our chemistry… spending more time together off the court has really helped us communicate better on the court.”

Nia Coffey echoed this sentiment, noting that the break served as a reset. “It was the first time in a while that we had Jordan [Canada] and Rhyne [Howard] back together, so we could practice as a full team. It’s a completely different feel now, and we see this second half as a new season.”

The Game: Key Moments and In-Game Highlights

The game tipped off with a palpable sense of urgency from both teams. Connecticut came out strong defensively, but Atlanta’s offense was powered by Tina Charles and Jordin Canada. Charles dominated the paint early, while Canada set the tone with her aggressive drives and playmaking. The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, but the Dream’s chemistry and balanced attack began to shine through.

Rhyne Howard contributed with 13 points, including timely free throws, while Allisha Gray added 11 points with consistent scoring throughout the game. However, it was Charles who stole the show, pouring in 22 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, securing another double-double. Her physicality and rebounding gave Atlanta a crucial edge, as Connecticut struggled to contain her.

The Sun made several pushes, particularly in the third quarter when they went on a 9-0 run to take a brief lead. DiJonai Carrington, Alyssa Thomas, and Brionna Jones (who had 12 points and 8 rebounds) were key contributors for Connecticut. But it was the Dream’s composure and leadership that defined the fourth quarter.

Early in the final period, the Dream’s decision to rely on their bench allowed Connecticut to close the gap and even take the lead. But the turning point came with 8:16 remaining when a steal by DeWanna Bonner led to a fast-break assist for Tyasha Harris, giving the Sun their first lead of the game at 61-59. Atlanta responded immediately. Naz Hillmon ended Connecticut’s 9-0 run with a crucial basket to tie the game, and Jordin Canada followed up with back-to-back threes, shifting the momentum back in the Dream’s favor.

As the clock ticked down, Charles took control. She hit a clutch three-pointer, grabbed key rebounds, and secured the game at the free-throw line. Her performance reached its peak when, after sinking a decisive shot, she shouted confidently, “I’m a bucket,” signaling to everyone in the arena that the Dream were not letting this one slip away. Post-game, Charles admitted to saying it and added, “I did. Some other explicits as well. Yeah. You know, I fell in love with this game just watching people score, you know? So I just always love working on my game. I love to score. I love to be a challenge to others. That’s just my confidence. I think that’s the New York nature, just where I’m from. Yeah, I believe I’m a bucket.”

Jordin Canada was the engine behind Atlanta’s success, finishing with 19 points, 6 steals, and 6 assists. She also earned the crown for her gritty play and leadership. Coach explained why Canada earned the honor: “She kept us super composed out there, attacked, put pressure at the rim constantly. Her ability to find her teammates, her ability to keep us calm and confident—she was a great leader.”

After the game, Coach emphasized the importance of composure and execution. “We’ve played them a couple of times, and we felt really good about what we could do defensively against them. Our ability to come together during those moments and stay composed was key.” Charles also reflected on her big night: “I don’t think I’m doing anything different. I just really love this game… It’s been a lot of fun having our group back.”

The win was a testament to the Dream’s growth throughout the season. From early struggles with injuries and chemistry to becoming a cohesive unit that can close out tough games, the Dream have shown resilience and a renewed sense of purpose. As they look toward the playoffs, this victory solidifies their confidence in taking on the league’s best.

The Dream’s Path Forward
With this win, Atlanta not only evens the season series against the Sun but also sends a message to the rest of the league: when fully healthy, they are a force to be reckoned with. The chemistry built off the court has translated into success on it, and with leaders like Charles and Canada stepping up in clutch moments, the Dream are peaking at the right time.

This game was more than just a win—it was a statement. The Dream have found their rhythm, and as they gear up for a potential playoff push, they are a team no one wants to face in a do-or-die situation.
