Uncasville, CT September 17, 2024 – Defense was at the forefront in a hard-fought battle at Mohegan Sun Arena, where the Connecticut Sun (27-12) fell to the Minnesota Lynx (30-9) by just two points 78-76 Despite Connecticut’s come back from a 12-point deficit, the Lynx held on for the win, fueled by their defensive intensity and clutch plays.

Connecticut’s defense set the tone early, but they couldn’t maintain enough consistency to stop Minnesota’s high-powered offense led by Napheesa Collier, who scored 25 points and added four critical blocks.  Coach White stated she’s skilled, versatile and she can score a lot of different ways. The Sun, known for their defensive prowess, limited the Lynx to just 28 points in the paint and forced 15 turnovers, leading to 19 points. However, Minnesota’s defensive effort proved just as tough, with McBride and Napheesa Collier anchoring the Lynx and combining for six steals and six blocks.

Alyssa Thomas was once again the heart of Connecticut’s defense, notching two steals while controlling the tempo on both ends. Her 18 points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists kept the Sun within striking distance, but even her tireless defensive effort couldn’t overcome Minnesota’s sharp shooting. DiJonai Carrington’s defensive energy and Marina Mabrey’s two blocks played a pivotal role in keeping Connecticut close. The Sun forced Minnesota into tough shots, holding them to 46.9% shooting, but their 16 turnovers became costly, particularly in the final minutes of the game.

Minnesota’s ability to convert Connecticut’s mistakes into points was the difference, as the Lynx capitalized on critical possessions late in the game. The Sun’s defense tightened up in the fourth quarter, allowing them to erase a 12-point deficit, but they couldn’t come up with the final stop they needed.

Despite the loss, head coach Stephanie White emphasized the need to sustain their defensive intensity for a full 40 minutes. “Our defense is what gives us a chance to win every night. But it must be there for the entire game,” she said post-game. Alyssa Thomas echoed her coach’s sentiment, stating, “This was everything we needed in terms of a test! The Sun will see Chicago Sky Thursday September 20th,2024 at 7pm.
