For nearly a month and a half, Angel Reese has been the talk of the WNBA, achieving double-doubles in 15 consecutive games. This historic streak, however, came to an end in a dramatic fashion during the Sky’s matchup against the Liberty on July 13th. With mere seconds remaining in the game, Reese was tantalizingly close to securing her 16th double-double, boasting 16 rebounds and 8 points. The crowd was electric, urging the ball into Reese’s hands for one final shot. However, the Liberty, determined to secure their victory and end Reese’s streak, surrounded her with four players, ensuring she couldn’t make that final, critical basket.
Just two days earlier, Reese had extended her streak to 15 double-doubles against the same Liberty team, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring 10 points. This impressive run began on June 4th, also against the Liberty, with Reese posting 13 points and 10 rebounds. Her most outstanding performance during this streak came on June 23rd, against the Indiana Fever, where she scored 25 points and collected 16 rebounds in a thrilling win over her “friend” Caitlin Clark.
The streak was not without controversy. On July 10th against Atlanta, Reese had 9 points and 13 rebounds, and on the final possession, the crowd demanded the ball be given to her. Her mentor, Tina Charles, fouled her, sending Reese to the free-throw line, where she extended her streak to 14. Some critics argued that the foul was intentional to preserve the streak, but regardless, it was a testament to Reese’s consistent performance.
Reese’s streak is one of the most impressive in WNBA history. She set a rookie record with her 10th consecutive double-double and surpassed WNBA legend Candace Parker’s record with her 13th consecutive double-double. Fittingly, her streak ended where it began, against the Liberty, in a game that showcased one of the best teams in women’s basketball.
The crowd celebrated Reese for her relentless effort and contribution to the game. Her coach commended her for “cleaning the boards” and consistently putting the ball in the basket. WNBA fans are grateful for the excitement and dedication Reese brought to each game during this historic run.
Thank you, Angel Reese, for an incredible ride and for setting a new standard of excellence in the WNBA.
