The Atlanta Dream (6-6) secured a much-needed win against the Los Angeles Sparks (4-10) in a thrilling game that highlighted standout performances from both rookies and veterans, particularly showcasing the greatness of Allisha Gray. Ranked 7th in the league, the Dream ended their back-to-back losses with a decisive 87-74 victory over the 10th ranked Sparks. This game was particularly notable for the impressive showing by the Sparks’ rookies, Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson, who both scored 16 points. However, it was Atlanta’s depth and consistency that led to their largest win of the season, marking a significant turnaround.
The Dream started strong with a 10-2 run in the first quarter, fueled by Allisha Gray and Tina Charles. Gray’s defensive prowess, marked by two steals, and Charles’ offensive contributions set an aggressive tone, leading Atlanta to a 20-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Aerial Powers provided a spark off the bench with a crucial 3-pointer that helped extend the Dream’s lead to double digits. Despite a brief comeback by the Sparks, Atlanta maintained their momentum and finished the half with a 45-40 lead.
The third quarter saw the Sparks attempting to close the gap, but the Dream’s resilience shone through. Rhyne Howard and Charles combined efforts to keep the lead intact, with Howard also leading in rebounds for the quarter. Atlanta’s defense and rebounding were key in maintaining their advantage. In the final quarter, Powers continued her impactful performance, helping to tie the game and later contributing to a decisive 15-5 run that solidified the Dream’s lead. Gray’s 3-pointer and subsequent jump shots extended the lead, ensuring a comfortable win for Atlanta.
Allisha Gray was deservedly crowned Player of the Game, not only for leading the team in scoring with a season-high 25 points but also for her outstanding defensive play. Gray’s three steals on the night were instrumental in disrupting the Sparks’ offensive rhythm and highlighted her all-around performance.
Rickea Jackson emphasized the importance of physicality in her post-game comments, stating, “If I don’t bring physicality to the other team, I’ll be on the bench, so I’m encouraged to be physical every game.” The Sparks’ coach expressed his disappointment in the fourth quarter performance, saying, “Just a disappointing fourth quarter, just couldn’t find any rhythm offensively. Their physicality bothered us, and we were struggling around the rim. Proud of Cam for stepping up after a tough offensive night in Minnesota. Bright days ahead for these two.” He also stressed the need for better execution, adding, “We’re putting ourselves in position, but we have to execute better. We need people to step up and want the ball. It’s a tough stretch with nine games in 18 days, but we need to continue growing.”
On the Dream’s side, head coach Tanisha Wright praised the team’s bounce-back performance, stating, “Good win for us. Great bounce-back win. We need to work on consistency. Our message is not to be satisfied.” Tina Charles, reflecting on her role as a mentor, said, “I try to pay it forward. Sylvia Fowles, Nakia Sanford, and others helped me when I started. I’m just continuing that tradition.” Wright also commended the team’s mentality, noting, “I’m happy they have a next play mentality. Not dwelling on the last play but moving on to focus on the play at hand.” Charles highlighted Aerial Powers’ energy, saying, “She energizes me. I’m quiet, and she’s full of energy. She’s special and important to our team both on and off the court.”
The Dream’s starting lineup remained consistent for the second consecutive game, and the win improved their all-time record against the Sparks to 22-20, with a 13-8 record at Gateway Center. This game also marked the Dream’s largest win margin of the season, witnessed by their seventh consecutive sellout crowd. Gray’s defensive brilliance, coupled with her offensive output, underscored her importance to the team. Tina Charles recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Aerial Powers was a key contributor off the bench, matching her season high with 13 points and adding six rebounds. This victory not only ended a losing streak but also showcased the Dream’s potential as they strive for consistency and improvement throughout the season.
