Atlanta Ruined Raheem Morris’ Homecoming and San Francisco’s Perfect Start

The Atlanta Falcons (3-4) handed the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers (6-1) their first loss of the season with a 29-20 upset at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on October 25, 2026, as Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdown passes and Atlanta forced four turnovers to erase an early 11-point deficit.

The Falcons entered Sunday having lost two straight games, but they picked the perfect opponent to remind everyone they could still compete. Facing former head coach Raheem Morris, now San Francisco’s defensive coordinator, Atlanta overcame an early 14-3 deficit with 23 unanswered points. Michael Penix Jr. threw touchdown passes to Nick Muse, Kyle Pitts and Drake London, finishing 25 of 34 for 213 yards without a turnover or sack. London’s seven catches produced 66 yards, while Bijan Robinson added 122 scrimmage yards. Pitts also reached 300 career receptions, becoming the sixth-youngest tight end to accomplish the feat. Defensively, Jessie Bates III intercepted Brock Purdy, while rookie Kendal Daniels delivered the finishing blow with another interception and a late fumble recovery. Remarkably, Daniels had been stretchered off with a neck injury just one week earlier. Atlanta’s four takeaways helped secure its first home victory of the season.

San Francisco had every opportunity to remain undefeated but repeatedly sabotaged itself. Christian McCaffrey scored the opening touchdown before temporarily leaving with a thigh injury, and rookie Kaelon Black broke loose for a 30-yard score. However, Black later lost a costly fumble, beginning the 49ers’ unraveling. Purdy finished with 288 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, while George Kittle contributed 88 receiving yards before losing a late fumble. The injury-depleted receiving corps certainly complicated matters, with Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel sidelined, but four turnovers cannot be blamed entirely on missing personnel. A potential Jordan Watkins touchdown was overturned, and Eddy Piñeiro missed an extra point after Kyle Juszczyk’s fourth-quarter score. Despite outgaining Atlanta 400-295, San Francisco couldn’t overcome its mistakes. Morris’ return ended in disappointment, and Kyle Shanahan’s unbeaten team entered its bye week with plenty to correct.
