Atlanta, Ga. — Fans packed into Fight Club Atlanta on Tuesday for a chance to meet one of boxing’s biggest attractions, undisputed heavyweight champion Claressa “The GWOAT” Shields.
Just minutes before the scheduled appearance, members of the gym were wrapping up their workout classes. Within moments, the boxing gym transformed into a fan experience as supporters lined up to catch a glimpse of Shields, take photos, collect autographs, and share a few words with one of the sport’s biggest stars.
Shields, accompanied by her boyfriend, rapper Papoose, made sure every fan felt seen. Rather than rushing through the line, the two spent time taking pictures, signing memorabilia, and engaging in genuine conversations with those in attendance.
For many of the young fans, meeting the boxing champion was an unforgettable experience.
One young woman participating in a summer boxing camp smiled as she reflected on her interaction with Shields.
“She’s amazing. She called me by my name, and she made me feel like a person when she was talking to me.”
The encounter carried an even deeper meaning.
“It means a lot to meet her… it means a lot to meet boxing people in general because boxing was a big thing with my dad. That was one of the places where we connected a lot.”
Another young attendee couldn’t contain her excitement after stepping into a mock faceoff with the champion.
“She was cool. She signed my boxing glove. I told her to square up, she squared up, and we were lit!”
She explained why the moment meant so much.
“It means a lot because she’s someone that I see on TV a lot, killing a whole bunch of people with her hands. I got to see her in person, so it means a lot.”
While the experience was meaningful for the fans, it was equally meaningful for Shields to receive such a warm welcome from Atlanta. The turnout exceeded what many expected, filling the venue with supporters eager to celebrate the champion ahead of her August 15 bout.
When asked what it means to bring one of her biggest fights to Atlanta, Shields didn’t hesitate.
“When you think about Atlanta, this is the real-life Wakanda. Like, for real. To me, it is.”
Shields also reflected on how far women’s boxing has come since the beginning of her professional career.
“I think women’s boxing has taken off far from where we used to be. Somebody asked me back in 2016 if I saw women’s boxing being where it’s at now, and I was like, ‘Heck no.’ I just wanted to fight on TV. I never thought about making a million dollars or fighting in front of 18,000 fans. I was like, ‘Just put me on TV.’ I was thinking small, and God was like, ‘Think bigger. Think bigger.’ So here we are.”
Joining Shields on the August 15 card is rising lightweight contender Tito Mercado, who will serve as the co-main event. When Shields was asked why Mercado was the right fighter to help headline the event, she simply handed him the microphone.
Mercado embraced the opportunity.
“Man, y’all want to see entertainment, right? That’s why y’all are showing up for Claressa, right? She always brings a show, whether it’s in the ring or everything she does. I think I’m going to be good support for her and bring a knockout before she closes the show like she always does.”
Mercado enters the fight with growing momentum and an increasing reputation as one of boxing’s rising stars. Hall of Famer “Sugar” Shane Mosley, who has worked closely with Mercado, offered high praise for the young contender.
“(He has) Everything. The speed, the power, the movement, the IQ. He’s a complete fighter. That’s what makes him dangerous.”
As for Mercado, he believes he’s only scratching the surface.
Training in Big Bear alongside Mosley has only fueled his confidence, but he already has his sights set on boxing’s biggest names.
“There are so many big names right now. Shakur Stevenson, Abdullah Mason, Keyshawn Davis… those are all fights I want.”
He even pointed to another potential blockbuster matchup.
“Another big fight would be Ryan Garcia. We’re both from California, so I think we could make something big out of that.”
Mercado didn’t stop there.
“I don’t think much of him as a fighter, but I think it’d be a big fight.”
The lightweight division remains crowded with elite talent, but Mercado welcomes the challenge. He believes earning mandatory status is the clearest path to the top and says he hopes the champions are willing to defend their titles rather than avoid the matchup.
If Tuesday’s fan event was any indication, Atlanta boxing fans are ready for August 15. Between the star power of Claressa Shields, the emergence of Tito Mercado, and the enthusiasm displayed by hundreds of supporters inside Fight Club Atlanta, the city appears ready to embrace one of boxing’s biggest nights of the summer.
