Georgia State vs. South Alabama: Jaguars Surge Ahead 28–14 at the Half in Battle of the 1–6s

ATLANTA, GA — In a matchup between two teams searching for their second win of the season, the Georgia State Panthers (1–6) and the South Alabama Jaguars (1–6) took the field at Center Parc Stadium in front of a noticeably sparse crowd. While Georgia State isn’t known for massive home turnouts, attendance for this one was especially thin. The band’s performance met only a smattering of applause, yet the Panthers came out fired up — led by long snapper Joe Laterza, who literally jumped over a cameraman as the team stormed the field.

The energy from that entrance carried into a fast-paced first quarter filled with explosive plays. Georgia State opened backed up deep in its own territory, with RB Rashad Amos taking the first carry before a failed screen to freshman Kyle Washington forced a quick punt. Across the field, two players named Bishop would define the early storyline — QB Bishop Davenport for South Alabama and DT Bishop Thomas for Georgia State. Thomas delivered the Panthers’ first big defensive play with a tackle for loss, but Davenport quickly countered, orchestrating a sharp opening drive capped by a touchdown pass to WR Brendan Jenkins, the 5’11” junior from Hoschton, Georgia. That early strike gave the Jaguars a 7–0 lead.

The Panthers responded immediately. Quarterback Cameran Brown found his rhythm, hitting WR Ted Hurst for a long touchdown that tied the game 7–7. The Jaguars answered on their next drive when Davenport dropped a 74-yard touchdown bomb to redshirt freshman Jeremy Scott, giving South Alabama a 14–7 lead with 6:12 left in the first quarter.

Brown again led Georgia State back, distributing the ball effectively before connecting with redshirt freshman RB Dennis Murray Jr. for a 53-yard catch-and-run score to even things at 14–14. But the Jaguars stayed hot. Davenport threw a 55-yard strike to WR Devin Voisin, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run by RB Kentrel Bullock. The extra point by Hamilton Diboyan made it 21–14 with just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

By the end of the first, both offenses had combined for more than 350 yards — 170 through the air for South Alabama and 140 for Georgia State — as the Jaguars led 21–14 after one quarter.

Second Quarter: Jaguars Keep Their Foot on the Gas

The second quarter opened with Georgia State attempting to regain momentum, but QB Cameran Brown’s next drive stalled, ending the back-and-forth scoring streak both teams enjoyed early on.

South Alabama, led once again by the poised Bishop Davenport, methodically moved down the field. The Jaguars’ balanced attack continued to slice through the Panthers’ defense, and Davenport capped another impressive drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 28–14. That marked four straight scoring drives for the Jaguars to start the game.

Georgia State, meanwhile, struggled to establish their primary offensive weapon. Star running back Branson Robinson had just one carry for five yards in the first half, leaving most of the offensive load to Murray Jr., who was far more involved in the passing game. A missed field goal on fourth down with 4:02 remaining in the half kept the score at 28–14, and the Panthers failed to close the gap before the break.

Davenport tried to make it five straight touchdown drives for South Alabama before halftime. The Jaguars appeared to have pulled it off, running a double reverse that found the end zone with just 10 seconds remaining — but the play was called back for holding. Hamilton Diboyan’s ensuing field goal attempt missed wide, breaking the scoring streak and sending both teams into the locker room with the Jaguars still in control, 28–14.

At halftime, Bishop Davenport’s performance stood out as nothing short of surgical. The sophomore finished the first half 15 of 17 passing for 241 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a 246.1 passer rating, while adding a rushing touchdown of his own. The Panthers, though showing flashes of offensive potential, offered little defensive resistance as the Jaguars moved the ball with ease throughout the half.

Halftime Score: South Alabama 28, Georgia State 14
