The 2025 NFL preseason is officially in the books, and honestly, it gave us more than just tune-up games, it gave us storylines, hope, and a real taste of what’s coming this fall. Preseason football can be tricky: we all know it doesn’t count in the standings, but it sure counts for the teams trying to find their rhythm, and for the players clawing their way onto a 53-man roster. This year, the energy felt different.
First, the rookies. It’s one thing to watch film from the draft and speculate; it’s another to see young players step onto an NFL field and prove they belong. Several first-round quarterbacks showed flashes, not perfect, but enough poise to let their fanbases dream about the future. You could feel the momentum shift in stadiums when those kids made plays. And on the defensive side, a handful of rookies played like veterans, exploding off the snap and showing that they’re ready to contribute right now.

Then there are the vets. Preseason isn’t really about them, but when they do suit up, it’s about sending a message: “We’re ready.” Some teams, like the Chiefs and 49ers, didn’t need to show much, they already know who they are. But others, the Giants, Patriots, and Bears, showed us enough glimpses of growth that fans have reason to believe things could actually be different this year.

Another thing preseason reminded me of? Depth wins championships. Injuries happen every year, and the teams that make it deep into January are the ones who spend August figuring out not just who their stars are, but who their “next man up” guys are. You saw that in how seriously some coaches managed their rotations. That’s the chess game of preseason, not just winning meaningless games, but preparing for the real grind ahead.

And finally, the fans. Preseason is a strange balance between patience and hype, but this year you could feel a hunger across the league. After two seasons where unpredictability was the norm, the 2025 preseason gave people permission to be hopeful again. Every city thinks it’s their year right now, and isn’t that the beauty of football?
So here we are. Preseason is done, the evaluations are over, and now it’s time for the real thing. September football hits different, no more experiments, no more dress rehearsals. Just Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays where everything matters. If the preseason was any hint, this year’s regular season is going to be wild.
