If you take a look at ESPN’s Recruiting Base Top 300 list you will see 5-Star Defensive Tackle, Walter Nolen, who recently signed with Texas A&M, Cornerback/Wide Receiver Travis Hunter, who recently shocked the college football world by signing with Jackson State after being previously linked to Florida State, and at #3, unsigned 5-star Defensive End Shemar Stewart. According to scouts, the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Shemar Stewart is an elite pass-rusher, who possesses exceptional reach, remarkable initial burst out of his stance, and uncommon power at the point of attack. Recently, Stewart put this power on display on Twitter, by retweeting a video of himself deadlifting 513lbs, 5 times with relative ease.

One scout at 247Sports, Andrew Ivins, compared Stewart to NFL Defensive Tackle Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs. This comparison is not far-fetch as it has been often said that Stewart looks like a “grown man amongst boys”, playing high school football. There is no question that Shemar Stewart has the potential to be a dominate player at the college level. Many college coaches can easily see his potential, and they would love to have the opportunity to see his potential fully realized under their tutelage. To that end, Stewart has received offers from over 20 of the top programs in the country, including LSU, Florida, UGA, Alabama, Clemson, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and his hometown team The University of Miami. One more very interesting school is also in the Stewart sweepstakes, Jackson State University.
Coach Deion Sanders recently made headlines by flipping the Nation’s Number 1 playmaker, Travis Hunter from Florida State to Jackson State, and according to Stewart, Coach Prime is pushing to shock the world again. According to Chris Boyle’s of the USA Today Newtork a SWAC source told him that Coach Sanders was working to flip one more big-time guy. He followed that sentence by naming Stewart, as the player Coach Sanders was intending to flip. On December 15th, Shemar Stewart tweeted a picture of himself looking deviously into a camera with the caption, “The look of when you about to sign your LOI to a power 5 school and then Deion Sanders calls you…”. Coach Sanders has openly said in several interviews that he is not done shaping his Jackson State roster. In the Celebration Bowl press conference, he stated that there were several position groups that needed a talent upgrade. One, of course, is the offensive line, but after losing an elite talent like former Florida transfer James Houston, who led Jackson State in sacks last season, to the NFL draft, it seems that edge pressure will be another aspect of Coach Sanders’ defense he will be looking to upgrade this off-season.
According to Stewart’s tweet on December 16th he will be choosing between his Top 3 choices Texas A&M, UGA, and Miami, on February 2nd. That date leaves a lot of time for Coach Prime and his recruiting staff to make a strong push to, as Celebration Bowl Executive Director John Grant would say, “bring him home”. Coach Sanders has stated in the past “We want men that want to play on Sundays. We coming to get ’em”. At this point there is little reason to doubt Coach Sanders and his ability to shock the college football world again. n
