Marshall Closes Strong and Beats Georgia State 30 to 18 Behind a Career Day From Carlos Del Rio Wilson

ATLANTA. On Senior Day at Center Parc Stadium, Georgia State showed effort, fire, and flashes of real momentum. However, Marshall quarterback Carlos Del Rio Wilson delivered one of the best performances of his collegiate career and the Thundering Herd pulled away late for a 30 to 18 victory. The win moved Marshall to 5-5 on the season and placed them just one victory away from becoming bowl eligible. Georgia State fell to 1-9 and closed their home schedule with yet another painful loss in a season filled with setbacks.

The game opened with instant electricity from the Panthers. Running back Jordan Simmons broke free for a spectacular 92-yard touchdown run that energized the crowd and gave Georgia State its brightest moment of the evening. Marshall responded with poise as running back Michael Allen capped a methodical drive with a four yard rushing score to even the game at seven. Georgia State held a clear advantage on the ground after the first quarter with 113 rushing yards compared to Marshalls 46. Yet the score remained tied which foreshadowed the frustration to come.

The second quarter belonged entirely to Carlos Del Rio Wilson. He began picking apart the Georgia State secondary with confidence and precision. He completed seven of his first ten passes for 101 yards and then delivered two impressive touchdown throws. His first scoring pass went to wide receiver Demarcus Lacey who elevated to secure a 5-yard catch in traffic. Minutes later Del Rio Wilson found tight end Toby Payne completely uncovered for a 26-yard touchdown. Payne walked into the end zone with ease as the Panthers defense struggled to adjust.

Georgia State created a spark just before halftime when kicker Braeden McAlister connected on a 60-yard field goal. It was a powerful strike that briefly shifted momentum back toward the Panthers. The halftime show added an unexpected emotional touch. The Georgia State band performed the theme song from the television show Friends including the well known lyric about feeling stuck in second gear. For a one and eight team battling through injuries and adversity the choice of song felt almost too perfect for the moment.

The third quarter opened with continued struggles from quarterback TJ Finley who entered the game as a former highly rated recruit, who spent time at LSU, but has not been able to recapture that early promise. He finished the 1st half with sixty six passing yards along with two interceptions and several costly mistakes. Despite his early struggles Finley engineered the best offensive sequence of the entire season for the Panthers. With just over three minutes left in the third quarter Georgia State marched 96 yards in 15 plays and dominated the clock for nearly nine minutes. The Panthers completed a successful two point conversion which brought the score 21-18 and temporarily breathed life back into the stadium.

Marshall regained control early in the fourth quarter when true freshman kicker Lorca Quinn from Donaghmore Ireland connected on a thirty yard field goal to extend the lead to 24 to 18. Shortly after that kick the stadium fell silent as a Marshall player suffered a serious injury that required a long delay and a cart with a neck brace. When play resumed Georgia State attempted another long drive but two sacks pushed the Panthers out of field goal range and halted their momentum.

The decisive moment of the fourth quarter came when Carlos Del Rio Wilson delivered his sharpest throw of the night. With the Panthers pressing to stay within one score he found wide receiver Adrian Norton for a twenty nine yard touchdown deep down the left side. Norton gained separation and Del Rio Wilson placed the ball perfectly which stretched the Marshall lead to thirty to eighteen and created the separation they needed.

Georgia State tried to rally once more as Finley led the Panthers into the red zone. However he lost control of the ball on a critical fumble that was recovered by Marshall. That turnover allowed the Herd to drain valuable time off the clock. The Panthers received the ball once more and moved it to midfield but the final drive ended as time expired. It was another heartbreaking finish to a season full of them.

Carlos Del Rio Wilson produced one of the best performances seen in a Marshall uniform in recent years. He completed twenty two of twenty seven passes for three hundred twenty one yards and three touchdowns while maintaining an eighty one percent completion rate. He also added sixteen carries for ninety eight yards which led all Marshall rushers. Tight end Toby Payne emerged as his top target with five catches for one hundred ten yards and one touchdown.

Marshall now climbs to 5-5 and needs just one more win to secure bowl eligibility. Georgia State falls to 1-9 and finishes their final home game of the regular season in another moment filled with effort but overshadowed by turnovers and missed opportunities. The Panthers have work to do to rebuild the program and regain the confidence of both players and potential recruits. For Marshall this game was about resilience efficiency and the rise of their quarterback who may be turning the corner at exactly the right time.
