Ed Reed will be named the 16th head coach at Bethune-Cookman according to Bethune-Cookman Athletics on Twitter. Ed Reed has been on the interview circuit for some and has had some success, but he is now in a place where he feels he can take on the responsibility of leading a team. According to Bleacher Report and CBS Sports, Reed was offered the heading coaching position at Grambling State University prior to the job being offered to current head coach Hue Jackson. However at the time, Reed was helping his alma mater out of a crisis and was not in a place to take the job. Reed’s name was also mentioned in Southern University’s hiring process last season and Jackson State University’s coaching vacancies this season.

Ed Reed, is a first ballot NFL Hall of Famer, eight time NFL All-Pro, nine time NFL Pro Bowler, and was named to the NFL 2000’s All-Decade Team. He is 44 years old and as far as coaching experience is concerned, he was hired as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills in 2016 and coached for one season. Ed Reed has often been brought in as motivational speaker for his former teams, the Baltimore Ravens and the Miami Hurricanes. He has always been noted as a strong leader and a man that can easily connect with younger players. He is also a respected football mind as Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick often praised him for having the best football mind of any opposing player he faced in the NFL. He has consistently earned the respect of his coaches. His lone NFL coaching experience was due in part to his relationship his former coach Rex Ryan.

Ed Reed is a Louisiana native, but has spent a lot of time in Florida over the past few years serving at the University of Miami as chief of staff and as an advisor to former head coach Manny Diaz and current head coach Mario Cristobal. Reed will have his work cut out for him at Bethune-Cookman, as even former NBA star, the athletic director, and current basketball coach Reggie Theus has admitted to having some serious financial struggles. He said in a recent article, that because of the lack of resources of the private institution and the lack of great facilities, he has lost 10 highly talented players to other schools. It will be up to the AD and Ed Reed to find funding and sponsorship to make BCU competitive in the rich Florida recruiting market. Bethune-Cookman finished 2-9 last season, under Coach Terry Sims and Sims was let go before the end of the season in November. It will be interesting to see how Coach Reed fills out his staff and the type of improvements he will make in his first off-season as head coach of the Wildcats.
