San Francisco came out throwing haymakers, but Arizona made the 49ers fight all the way to the finish. Brock Purdy threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, opening the afternoon with one of the strangest scores you’ll see all season: a short completion to Mike Evans that turned into an 80-yard Deebo Samuel touchdown after Evans flipped him the ball on a hook-and-ladder. Samuel was officially credited with 80 receiving yards and a touchdown without recording a catch — the most receiving yards on a play without a reception since at least 2000. Evans added a 23-yard touchdown of his own before later being carted off following a hard second-quarter hit. Christian McCaffrey added 75 rushing yards and a score as San Francisco built a 23-6 lead.

Then Arizona turned it into a game. Jacoby Brissett threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover, Michael Wilson caught 11 passes for 89 yards and a score, and the Cardinals stormed all the way back to 29-27 with 2:51 remaining. That was when Purdy and George Kittle ended the comeback talk. Kittle, who finished with six catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns, hauled in a 20-yard score with 1:31 left to restore a two-possession cushion. Arizona finished with 81 offensive plays and nearly 39 minutes of possession, but San Francisco needed only 50 plays to pile up 437 yards at a ridiculous 8.7 yards per snap. The Cardinals kept swinging; the 49ers just kept landing the bigger punches.
