Rashee Rice Suspension Looms: Will Rookie Jalen Royals Rise as the Chiefs’ Next Offensive Weapon?

Now that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has received a legal ruling in connection to the multi-car crash he caused in Dallas earlier this offseason, the NFL is expected to move forward with disciplinary action. While the league has not yet announced its decision, a suspension ranging from 2 to 6 games seems likely based on past precedents.

Let’s not forget the gravity of the incident. Seven lives were directly impacted that day, and by the grace of God, all survived. It could have been far worse. While the legal system has now had its say, the NFL will address its own standards of conduct.

From a football standpoint, Rice’s likely absence at the start of the 2025 season opens the door for a new name to emerge. Enter Jalen Royals, the Chiefs’ 4th-round rookie wide receiver out of Utah State — and perhaps their next offensive surprise.

The Chiefs have found themselves in a similar situation over the past two seasons. In 2023, they leaned on then-rookie Rashee Rice after drops and inconsistent play plagued Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney. The following season, it was Xavier Worthy’s turn to step up after Marquise “Hollywood” Brown was sidelined before Week 1 and Rice was injured during the game against the Chargers.

Kansas City hopes to start the 2025 campaign with a healthy Hollywood Brown and Worthy on the field, but that third receiver spot is wide open. JuJu Smith-Schuster, back in the fold, may get the majority of those early snaps. However, based on offseason reports and OTA buzz, Royals is turning heads. Some even refer to him as a “Rashee Rice clone.”

It’s not just talk. Physically, the comparison is striking: Royals is 6’0”, 205 pounds with a 4.42-second 40-yard dash; Rice is 6’1”, 204 pounds and ran a 4.51. While Rice plays faster than his time suggests, Royals also brings a similar playing style — physical, tough, and aggressive after the catch. His tape from Utah State shows an ability to turn screen passes into big plays, a trait that could be utilized heavily in Andy Reid’s system.

Royals excels at tracking the deep ball and making defenders miss in space. His skillset aligns perfectly with what the Chiefs have leaned on in recent years — young receivers making the most of their opportunities when veterans falter or are unavailable.

Still, the success of the 2025 Chiefs offense won’t rest solely on the shoulders of any one wideout. The offensive line — particularly the left tackle position — will be critical. First-round pick Josh Simmons is expected to compete for that role and, if he lives up to praise from NFL legends like Jason Kelce and Joe Thomas, he could be the anchor Mahomes needs to return this offense to Top 5 form.

As training camp opens on July 22nd, all eyes will be on Royals, Simmons, and the rest of Kansas City’s young core. With Rashee Rice’s status now entering its next chapter, opportunity knocks for a new Chief to rise.
