Walker Finishes “Backfield Madness” week as Chiefs Bury Broncos, 31-10

Patrick Mahomes’ return was supposed to own the night, but Kenneth Walker III stole the show. Nine months after the torn ACL that ended his 2025 season, Mahomes looked rusty early — starting 2 of 12 — before settling in to finish with 184 yards, two passing touchdowns and a 15-yard rushing score in Kansas City’s 31-10 win. Walker took the pressure off him, torching Denver for 173 yards on 23 carries and breaking the game open with a 60-yard touchdown. The former Seahawk and reigning Super Bowl MVP couldn’t have sent much louder of a message to Seattle in his Chiefs debut. Kansas City piled up 220 rushing yards, its third-highest single-game total in Andy Reid’s 14 seasons with the Chiefs. Travis Kelce added 71 receiving yards, with his 59-yard catch pushing him past Jason Witten into second place all-time in receiving yards among tight ends.

Bo Nix was making a comeback of his own after the fractured right ankle that ended Denver’s playoff run last January, but Sean Payton’s Broncos never found their footing. Nix finished 17 of 28 for 131 yards, a touchdown and an interception while losing a fumble and taking four sacks. Chiefs first-round rookie Mansoor Delane introduced himself by picking Nix off on his first NFL series before leaving with a shoulder injury. Evan Engram provided Denver’s lone touchdown, while Courtland Sutton was held to 11 yards and the Broncos managed only 61 rushing yards. Even Brandon Jones’ interception of Mahomes at the Kansas City 5 produced only a field goal. Walker’s explosion, Mahomes settling down and a defense that smothered Denver after the opening quarter turned the opener into a one-sided statement.
