WNBA Semifinals Kick Off with a Bang as the Sun Defeat the Liberty 78-63 in Game 1!

The WNBA Semifinals opened with a thrilling clash between the Connecticut Sun and the New York Liberty, and it was the Sun who emerged victorious with a 78-63 win in Game 1. The Sun brought an abundance of energy to the court, and their defensive prowess fueled their offensive performance. In the early moments of the game, the Sun took control, sinking two critical three-pointers by Rebecca Allen who said she wanted to come out assertive and confident. The sun takes an early 21-14 lead. The New York Liberty had to call a timeout as they struggled with turnovers, finishing the first quarter trailing 25-21.

In the second quarter, the New York Liberty made a strong push, going on a 12-10 run to reduce Connecticut’s lead to just two points at 35-33. Alyssa Thomas and Ty Harris played pivotal roles for the Sun during this period. However, the Liberty finished the second quarter with a 7-4 run, taking a three-point lead into halftime, leading 40-37. Coach Sandy Brondello emphasized the importance of “doing the little things great not good”. Connecticut was led by Allen with 12 points, two rebounds, two steals, and one block, while Thomas contributed six points, five rebounds, five assists, and one steal. The Sun shot 42.1% from the field, while the Liberty had a slightly higher shooting percentage at 48.4% in the first half.

In the second half, the Connecticut Sun came out with an explosive 16-2 run, establishing a commanding 53-42 lead and prompting the New York Liberty to call a timeout with 5:39 left in the third quarter. However, the Liberty mounted a quick 6-0 run of their own, narrowing the Sun’s lead to just five points at 53-48, with 4:12 remaining in the quarter. Connecticut, determined to maintain their advantage, finished the third quarter on a 12-7 run, extending their lead to ten points at 65-55 as they entered the pivotal fourth quarter. During this crucial period, DeWanna Bonner led the charge for Connecticut with eight points,

while players like Allen, Tiffany Hayes, and Natisha Hiedeman each contributed six points, showcasing a well-rounded offensive effort by the Sun.

The fourth quarter saw Connecticut open with a quick 5-0 run, extending their lead to 70-55 with 8:36 remaining. Bonner continued to shine, scoring all five points during this stretch. Breanna Stewart admitted they lacked composure and poise but vowed to learn from the game and prepare for the upcoming contests.
