428 Yards, 17 Points: Jaguars Slam the Door on Burrow, Bengals, 22-17

The Jacksonville Jaguars survived a 428-yard passing day from Joe Burrow and beat the Cincinnati Bengals 22-17 on October 4, 2026, at Paycor Stadium, leaning on timely defense, two interceptions and another strong day from Trevor Lawrence.

Joe Burrow threw for 428 yards and Cincinnati still scored just 17 points — which tells you everything about how Jacksonville played when it actually mattered. Trevor Lawrence was the cleaner quarterback, completing 18-of-23 for 227 yards and a touchdown without a turnover to finally earn his first win over Burrow. Brenton Strange was his security blanket with seven catches for 95 yards, Brian Thomas Jr. caught the 7-yard touchdown, Bhayshul Tuten ran for 73 yards despite having two touchdowns erased by penalties, and Chris Rodriguez Jr. delivered the backbreaker with a 25-yard fourth-quarter touchdown. Cam Little handled special teams with field goals from 55, 28 and 54 yards. Cincinnati’s defense did make Lawrence work, sacking him four times, but Jacksonville kept surviving its own mistakes — including 13 penalties for 125 yards — and never gave the Bengals a turnover to steal.

Jacksonville’s defense gave up yards, but it made Burrow miserable in the moments that decided the game. Jourdan Lewis picked him off after Josh Hines-Allen bulldozed Orlando Brown Jr. into the pocket, and Foyesade Oluokun grabbed another interception with Cincinnati threatening to take the lead. Travis Hunter might have had the coldest play of the afternoon wiped away: he intercepted Burrow, took off on the return and snatched Tee Higgins’ ankles in the open field, only for roughing the passer to erase the whole thing. Hunter responded with a red-zone breakup and continued looking more comfortable as his cornerback workload grows. Higgins had to carry Cincinnati’s passing game after Ja’Marr Chase left with a concussion, exploding for 11 catches and 157 yards, while Chase Brown caught 11 for 71 but was completely erased on the ground with 10 yards on nine carries. Even Evan McPherson’s lone 29-yard field goal came with history, tying Cincinnati’s franchise record with his 21st consecutive make. Jacksonville entered Sunday allowing an NFL-best 12.0 points per game; after holding Burrow and Cincinnati to 17 while allowing only 23 rushing yards, I’d put this defense comfortably in the top five — and closer to No. 3 than No. 5 right now. Burrow got his numbers, but Jacksonville got the stops — including Rayuan Lane dropping Brown one yard short on fourth down to end it.
