Bucs Defense Takes Over as Dallas Comes Up Short, 24-16

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finally broke through with a 24-16 win over the Dallas Cowboys on October 8, 2026, at AT&T Stadium, riding Bucky Irving’s 165 rushing yards and three forced turnovers to give rookie Jalon Daniels his first career victory and move Tampa Bay to 1-4.

If Tampa Bay was waiting for somebody to drag it out of an 0-4 hole, Bucky Irving basically grabbed the whole team by the collar. Irving exploded for 165 yards on 21 carries, ripped off a 72-yarder on Tampa Bay’s first snap of the second half and finished with 175 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns as the Bucs took over the game after halftime. That gives him 406 rushing yards through five games, and this was easily his loudest performance yet. Jalon Daniels looked nothing like an undrafted rookie making just his second NFL start and first on the road, completing 19-of-25 for 189 yards, a touchdown and zero turnovers while helping Tampa control the ball for an absurd 39:21. Daniels opened Tampa’s scoring with a patient 15-play touchdown drive capped by his five-yard pass to Irving, then Tez Johnson’s 64-yard catch and Emeka Egbuka’s 14-yard touchdown run helped turn a 10-7 halftime deficit into 24-10. Tampa did it without Baker Mayfield, Antoine Winfield Jr., Benjamin Morrison and SirVocea Dennis, which makes the performance even better.

Dallas, meanwhile, picked a terrible night to fall apart. Dak Prescott threw for 316 yards, but 24-of-42 with two interceptions wasn’t good enough, even if both picks came off deflections — one through Ryan Flournoy and the game-killer through Jake Ferguson at Tampa’s 12 with 1:23 left. George Pickens finally had the breakout game Dallas had been waiting for, posting his first 100-yard game of the season with nine catches for 130 yards and an 18-yard touchdown, while Flournoy added 90. CeeDee Lamb went from a ridiculous 17-catch, 189-yard game four days earlier to two catches for nine yards on five targets, while battling a quad issue that had him moving in and out of the lineup. The Cowboys also rushed for only 50 yards and turned it over three times, including KaVontae Turpin’s fumble. Tampa’s defense deserves real credit: Yaya Diaby and Alex Anzalone picked off Prescott, Jacob Parrish broke up four passes, and the Bucs held Dallas scoreless for the entire third quarter. Dallas was favored, at home, facing a winless team with a rookie backup quarterback — and Bucky Irving looked like the best player in the building while Jalon Daniels looked like he belonged there.
