The first thing you notice about Medina Okot is not just her size. At 6-foot-6, she commands attention the moment she steps on the floor. It is her presence. There is a calm excitement to her, a quiet confidence that comes from someone who understands just how far she has come and how much further she believes she can go.
“I love it over here,” Okot said during her first days in training camp. “Everybody’s being nice to us, and they’re willing to help us with everything. I’m honestly enjoying it. I love it here.”
For Okot, this moment is bigger than basketball. It is the realization of something she once only imagined.
“It means so much to me. I’m living a dream come true. That was my dream… I wanted to get drafted by one of the teams over here. I’m just so proud and grateful for this opportunity.”

That gratitude shows up in the way she talks about her journey, her coaches, and the people who helped shape her along the way. Her time under Dawn Staley was transformative, not just in developing her game, but in shaping her mindset.
“One thing that really stood out to me was just that challenges are going to be there, but it depends on how you’re going to handle them,” Okot said. “Just be able to keep moving. It’s going to get better every day.”
That mentality is exactly what drew the Atlanta Dream to her.
On draft night, the organization made it clear that Okot was not just another pick. She was a target. A priority. A player they believed in long before her name was called.
“We were really hopeful, maybe a little pessimistic that she’d be available when we picked,” head coach Karl Smesko said. “When we got the opportunity, we seized it.”
And it is not hard to see why.
Okot brings a rare blend of size, skill, and upside. She crashes the boards with purpose, moves fluidly for a player her size, and is already showing signs of expanding her game beyond the paint. Her ability to stretch the floor, including flashes of three-point shooting, adds another layer to what is already a promising foundation.

The Friday before training camp opened, we spoke with Coach Smesko, and he had these words about Okot: “I think Medina just has all the talent in the world. I’ll talk to her, but I don’t even know if she knows how good she could be.”
Two days into training camp, after seeing her on the floor with her new teammates, Smesko continued his praise for Okot. What has stood out most early on is how quickly she is adapting.
“She’s fantastic,” Smesko said. “Really, she’s exceptional. She can post up, put the ball on the floor, her shot’s good, and defensively she understands concepts. She’s off to a great start.”
That defensive understanding is something Okot takes pride in.
“Defense,” she said with a smile when asked about the most underrated part of her game.
It is a simple answer, but it reflects a player who knows where she can make an immediate impact. On a team built around effort, physicality, and true sisterhood, defense is not just a skill. It is an expectation.
And that sisterhood is something Okot has already felt.
“They’re so caring,” she said. “They keep asking if I’m okay, if I have any questions. Angel Reese is around me, asking if I need anything, if I understand everything the coaches are saying, and she’s willing to explain it to me.”
For a rookie adjusting to a new level and a new system, that kind of environment matters. It accelerates growth. It builds confidence. It allows players to focus on becoming the best version of themselves.
Okot is embracing all of it.
She is looking forward to her first preseason game, not with nerves, but with excitement.
“I’m looking forward to playing with the greatest players in the nation,” she said. “Players I’ve been looking up to growing up.”
That perspective is important. It reminds you that while the league sees Okot as a prospect with “unlimited upside,” she still sees herself as a student of the game, eager to learn, eager to grow, and eager to prove she belongs.
And if early impressions are any indication, she does.
The Dream are building something in Atlanta. A roster filled with talent, physicality, and versatility. A team that believes in competing for championships, not just in the future, but now.
Okot may be at the beginning of her journey, but she is already a part of that vision.
A 6-foot-6 center who rebounds, defends, and is learning to stretch the floor is valuable. A player who pairs that with humility, work ethic, and a deep sense of gratitude is something more.
For Medina Okot, the dream is no longer distant. It is here. It is real. And it is just getting started.
